This week I had my first ever deep tissue sports massage from the one and only Helen McGovern and it was Ah. Ma. Zing!

I’ve always had a delicate back but carrying and delivering two full term babies has left it in need of serious attention. So I decided to pay Helen a visit in the hope that it would improve my posture and lower back pain.

As soon as Helen started I could feel all the knots she was working on loosening. Its strange but although I knew my back was bad I had no idea how many knots I needed loosening. Knots are basically fibres within the muscle that are overworking and remain switched on. Helens job is to relax these fibres so they turn off. Having the knots loosened and the muscle fully relaxed means blood flow through the fibres more efficiently so the muscle works at maximum capacity.


Helen massaged the knots in my back, neck and shoulders before moving on to my legs and glutes. I think its safe to say that this massage was more than due!

It felt uncomfortable at times but it felt great! More than once I had to stop the conversation as my face was screwed up so tight. But it felt good uncomfortable! Helen has been working in sports massage for over ten years (and managed to get her hands on some VERY famous muscles!) and really knows her stuff. I knew I was in good hands, literally, so trusted her when it got uncomfortable.

The next day I felt sore and could feel where all those knots had been. I made sure to stay hydrated and I iced the sore spots to help reduce the inflammation. A few days after the massage the soreness had completely gone and I’ve already noticed a significant improvement in my lower back pain and posture.

I would highly recommend getting a deep tissue sports massage what ever training you are doing, to ensure your muscles are in the best shape and fit to do their job of keeping you moving effectively.

The plan of action from here is to continue seeing Helen for regular deep tissue sports massage but also do focus more on my own maintainence programme at home with stretching and foam rolling.
